amTEFL Course Requirements:
Bachelor's + interview.  BA is required for job placement assistance.

The amTEFL is a 130-hour TEFL certification course specifically designed for inexperienced, novice North American teachers who want to live and teach abroad. The purpose of the program is to provide participants with challenging opportunities to assess and develop their knowledge and practical skills in the Teaching of English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). The overall emphasis is on practical classroom teaching, on assisting the participants in the preparation of materials and lessons, and on presenting techniques that the participants can use in their own classrooms and share with their colleagues.

The amTEFL offers participants:

  • A concrete education, both theoretical and practical TEFL methodology
  • Mentoring by veteran ALI teachers
  • Observed practice teaching
  • Job placement assistance for graduates in good standing

Participants will receive a comprehensive program binder, including curriculum materials, lessons, lesson planning templates, program rules and regulations, and a guide to EFL/ESL resources on the Internet.

After successful completion of the amTEFL program, graduates will be well prepared to enter the job market with a toolset of skills and a solid foundation in TEFL methodology which will enable them to enter a classroom with the skills needed to be effective and successful teachers.

For additional information on the amTEFL program, email Rob Shaffer or call (619) 594-8740.

* amTEFL graduates have the option to receive three units of credit** from San Diego State University at an additional cost of $228.

** SDSU has established the credit course number ED X997 for teacher training workshops. Courses approved as ED X997 are fully reviewed and approved by the faculty of the College of Education. The credit earned is recorded at the graduate level and is designed to meet the needs of educators who wish to develop or continue the study of a current topic. Courses numbered at the 900 level are not designed to be applicable to graduate programs at SDSU but, like all transferable credit may, with approval from the receiving institution, be applicable to degrees at that institution.
